You spent ages getting ready. You were full of excitement about the first date but also rather nervous. You went on the date and it all went just fine but afterwards you are left with the feeling that the date did not go so well and you feel disappointed. So now you are asking yourself what went wrong on the first date you just had?
A Date Is A Bit Like A Job Interview
A first date is a peculiar and unusual experience. It is a little bit like a job interview but it so much more about feelings and interpretation of behaviour than any CV would ever include. The little things can count for a lot and they can work against you. The way you smile, how often you smile and the things that make you smile can all entrance the right person but may have no effect at all on the wrong person. There are so many things that can help the first date go well or make either one of you feel something is not quite right.
The conversation may flow and you seem to enjoy each others company but things can still go wrong on the first date. Is the conversation flowing the right way? We sometimes spend either too much time talking ourselves and it can be overpowering for the other person. We can be so busy trying to explain who, are and what we are all about and our own feelings that we accidently forget to ask about the other person and what they think and feel. We may not do this on purpose but the effect can be to leave the other person feeling unappreciated or uninteresting and we all want to feel that on a date the other person is interested in us.
On a date we want to feel special and feel special about the person we are with.. There can be something magical about it when you just feel so right with somebody but sadly, sometimes, only one of the two people feels it is special and for it to truly be special both people need to feel the same way.
